What is Tongue Tie (Ankyloglossia)?
Ankyloglossia, commonly known as tongue tie, is a condition present at birth in which a baby’s tongue is tethered too tightly to the floor of the mouth by a band of tissue called the lingual frenulum. This can restrict the tongue’s range of motion and interfere with breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, and possibly later speech development.
Signs Your Newborn May Have a Tongue Tie
Some signs that your baby may have a tongue tie include:
Difficulty latching or staying latched during feeds
Clicking sounds while nursing
Gassiness, reflux, or fussiness at the breast or bottle
Poor weight gain
Painful nursing, cracked or damaged nipples
Short, thick, or heart-shaped tongue tip
Every baby is different, and tongue tie can vary in severity. There can be other anatomical issues that can impact feeding. That’s why an individualized, comprehensive assessment by a physician is key.
Why Treat Tongue Tie Early?
When left untreated, significant tongue ties may interfere with:
Feeding success (breast or bottle)
Weight gain
Maternal milk supply
Speech development and oral health later in life
Early evaluation and, when appropriate, a frenotomy can help relieve symptoms, improve feeding, and reduce stress for both babies and parents.
How to Get Started
You can schedule a tongue tie evaluation as a stand-alone visit or as part of our Fourth Trimester Package for newborns. Visits can take place in our Epping office or in your own home (at an additional cost), based on your comfort and preference.
