Sun Safety for Kids: How to Protect Young Skin This Spring & Summer

At WanderCare Pediatrics, we love seeing kids get outside, stay active, and enjoy the warmer months. Spring and summer bring more opportunities for outdoor play—but they also bring stronger sun exposure. Because children’s skin is more sensitive than adults’, protecting it early is one of the most important things you can do for their long-term health.

Here’s how our team recommends keeping your child safe in the sun this season.

Why Sun Protection Matters

Sunburn isn’t just a short-term discomfort—it’s a sign of skin damage. Repeated exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays in childhood can increase the risk of skin problems later in life, including premature aging and skin cancer.

Kids are especially vulnerable because their skin is thinner and more delicate. That’s why building sun-safe habits early is key.

Choosing the Right Sunscreen for Your Child

We recommend keeping it simple and consistent when it comes to sunscreen.

Look for:

  • SPF 30 or higher

  • Broad-spectrum protection (protects against UVA and UVB rays)

  • Water-resistant formulas

For infants and children with sensitive skin, mineral-based sunscreens (with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) are often the best choice. They’re gentle and sit on top of the skin rather than being absorbed.

How to Apply Sunscreen (the Right Way)

One of the most common issues we see is improper application.

  • Apply sunscreen 15–30 minutes before going outside

  • Use enough to cover all exposed skin (don’t forget ears, neck, and feet)

  • Reapply every 2 hours, or sooner if your child is swimming or sweating

A good rule of thumb: if your child has been outside for a while, it’s probably time to reapply.

Sun Safety for Babies

Sun protection looks a little different for infants:

  • Under 6 months:
We recommend avoiding direct sunlight as much as possible. Use shade, hats, and lightweight clothing to protect their skin.

  • Over 6 months:
You can begin using small amounts of sunscreen on exposed areas, along with continued use of hats and protective clothing.

If you’re unsure what’s best for your baby, we’re always here to guide you.

Don’t Rely on Sunscreen Alone

Sunscreen is important—but it’s only one piece of the puzzle.

We encourage families to build a full sun-safety routine:

  • Wear protective clothing like rash guards and wide-brim hats

  • Seek shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM

  • Use sunglasses to protect your child’s eyes

  • Keep kids hydrated during outdoor play

Common Mistakes We See

Even with the best intentions, these are easy to overlook:

  • Skipping sunscreen on cloudy days

  • Forgetting to reapply

  • Missing areas like the scalp, ears, and lips

  • Assuming one morning application is enough for the whole day

Small adjustments can make a big difference in protecting your child’s skin.

Building Healthy Habits Early

At WanderCare Pediatrics, we believe prevention starts with everyday routines. Teaching your child to apply sunscreen before heading outside—and modeling that behavior yourself—helps create habits that last a lifetime.
