From Scraped Knees to Stitches: Navigating Summer Ouchies with WanderCARE

Summer is the season of movement, adventure, and outdoor memories. From learning to ride a bike on the sidewalk to climbing the “perfect” backyard tree, kids are finally in their element. But with all that wandering comes the inevitable summer “ouchie.”

At WanderCARE Pediatrics, we know a trip to the Emergency Room can easily turn into a five-hour wait, a stressful experience, and a ruined Saturday for the whole family. That’s why our practice is designed to help families manage many common summer injuries quickly, calmly, and comfortably — often without the need for the ER.

Common Summer Injuries & How to Prevent Them

The “Wheels” Wipeout: Scrapes & Road Rash

Bikes, scooters, skateboards, and rollerblades are all part of summer fun — but pavement can be unforgiving.

Prevention Tips:

  • Make “No Helmet, No Wheels” a household rule

  • Use knee and elbow pads for beginners

  • Encourage kids to ride in safe, open areas away from traffic

At-Home Care:

If your child gets scraped up:

  • Gently clean the area with mild soap and running water

  • Avoid hydrogen peroxide, which can damage healing tissue

  • Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly

  • Cover with a clean bandage

Most scrapes heal well with basic care, but larger wounds or areas with embedded debris may need medical attention.

The “Waterfront” Slip: Cuts & Lacerations

Pool decks, docks, wet rocks, and slippery patios are common sources of summer injuries. One quick fall can lead to a deep cut, split chin, or foot laceration.

Prevention Tips:

  • Enforce “walking feet only” around water

  • Use non-slip shoes near pools and docks

  • Keep running and roughhousing away from slippery surfaces

When a Cut Needs More Than a Bandage:

If a wound is:

  • Deep

  • Gaping open

  • Bleeding heavily

  • Located on the face

  • Not closing together naturally

…it may need professional closure.

The WanderCARE Difference

Instead of sitting in a crowded Emergency Room, WanderCARE families can often receive care right in the office — or even at home.

Dr. Jo provides:

  • Suturing (stitches)

  • Dermabond skin adhesive

  • Wound evaluation and cleaning

  • Calm, personalized pediatric care

Our goal is to help children feel safe and supported while getting the care they need quickly.

The “Nature” Nuisance: Splinters & Tick Bites

Summer in New England means more hiking, barefoot adventures, camp days, and unfortunately… ticks.

Tick Prevention Tips:

  • Use insect repellents containing 20–30% DEET

  • Wear light-colored clothing when hiking

  • Perform nightly tick checks, especially:

    • Behind ears

    • Along the hairline

    • Under arms

    • Behind knees

    • Around waistbands and ankles

Proper Tick Removal:

If you find a tick:

  • Use fine-tipped tweezers

  • Pull straight upward gently and steadily

  • Clean the area with soap and water afterward

Avoid “folk remedies” like matches, nail polish, or smothering methods, which can actually increase risk.

Procedures Without the Stress

One of the most valuable parts of a WanderCARE membership is access to pediatric care that helps families avoid unnecessary hospital visits.

We commonly provide:

  • Stitches for deep cuts

  • Skin glue for smaller lacerations

  • Splinter removal

  • Abscess drainage

  • Splinting for suspected sprains or minor fractures

  • Guidance coordinating imaging or specialty care when needed

Why Families Choose WanderCARE

In a busy ER, children are often overwhelmed by loud noises, long waits, and unfamiliar faces.

At WanderCARE, Dr. Jo creates a calm, no-rush environment where children feel comfortable and parents feel heard. We take the time to explain procedures, ease anxiety, and support the entire family through the healing process.

Because sometimes the best medicine is simply having a pediatrician who knows your child.

When to Call WanderCARE Immediately

As a WanderCARE member, you don’t have to spend hours wondering whether an injury “needs a doctor.” Families can text photos or videos directly to Dr. Jo for guidance.

Reach out right away if:

  • A cut is deep or has jagged edges

  • You can see yellow fat tissue or muscle

  • Your child cannot bear weight after a fall

  • The injury involved something rusty or dirty

  • A wound becomes red, swollen, warm, or develops pus

  • Your child experiences vomiting, confusion, or extreme sleepiness after a head injury

Adventure More. Stress Less.

Summer should be filled with memories — not waiting rooms.

At WanderCARE Pediatrics, we help families handle life’s unexpected bumps, bruises, stitches, and splinters with personalized pediatric care designed around convenience, comfort, and peace of mind.

Whether it’s a scraped knee, a tick bite, or a surprise set of stitches, WanderCARE is here to help your family get back to what matters most: enjoying summer together.
